On April 7, Mesa Community College's softball team took on Gateway Community College and breast cancer awareness, selling pink T-shirts at the game to support a local breast cancer research center. In the first of two games of the doubleheader, the Thunderbirds displayed their offensive capabilities by scoring five runs in the first inning.
Looking for somewhere to send your 3rd to 8th grade children this summer? Are they interested in sports? Well Mesa Community College is hosting their first Thunderbird Sports Academy. The event is focused on improving children's athletic capabilities and it runs June 8-12.
The Thunderbirds took on the Phoenix College Bears on April 10 as the season's end draws closer. It was a windy day as the Thunderbirds came up to the mound and launched the afternoon game with their defense geared up and ready to play. Phoenix College got ahead early scoring four runs in the first inning before MCC could get back into the dugout.
On April 10, Mesa Community College held its fifteenth annual Mesa Classic track meet. This event included more than 600 competing athletes from various schools such as BYU, Central Arizona, Montana State, Northern Iowa and Utah, among many others. Overall the Thunderbird men placed third in the Mesa Classic and the Lady Thunderbirds placed sixth.
The Associated Students of Mesa Community College, Student Government, is teaming up with the MCC football team in order to use star power to influence the student body to achieve their goals. "When we approached a lot of these people they said it would be an honor to be a part of this event," said Louanna Faine, Special Events Chair for ASMCC.
Spring has come and gone and with it did all of the money that the Cactus League was bringing into the Valley. According to the Cactus League Web site, in 2007 more than $300 million was brought in over the course of spring training. I can only imagine they expected much more this year with the addition of the Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Cactus League system.
