On a circular track 40 feet by 20 feet, teams of women don uniforms and battle on roller-skates in the growing phenomenon know as roller derby. The Arizona Derby Dames have become the biggest roller derby league in the nation and is just one of the three leagues in this state.

Tattoos once regarded as a passing fad have become more popular than ever, leading to the question of whether or not they are addictive. Jan Tice, executive director of an alcohol and drug program gives her answer: "Tattoos are an interesting kind of addiction with many elements. They can love the feel of the tattooing, the line between pleasure and pain. It's euphoric, enjoyable and hurts like hell." Student Lacey Hinkle believes that tattoos can be addicting but that it depends on the person.

'Role Model' star reprises 'American Pie' persona

He is best known as Stiffler in "American Pie" but good ol' Seann William Scott is branching out these days, at least a little bit. With his latest upcoming movie Role Models, opening Nov. 7, Scott said that although he knew the character would resemble Stiffler he strived to make him, "less of a jock and a jerk,". Well, Scott you succeeded. While he knows this may not be the big one that lands him the gold guy, Scott explained his motives behind wanting to do this film.

Mystery, intrigue all in 'Shack'

The recently released novel "The Shack" by William P. Young is possibly the most intriguing book I have ever read. The book revolves around Mack coping with the disappearance of his youngest daughter Missy. After days of searching, the police team, along with Mack, finally come across a small shack, and inside was the little red dress Missy was last seen in, completely soaked in blood. Later on Mack goes out to get the mail and finds a letter asking him to meet "Papa" at the place where Missy's dress was found.

Students urged to submit work to writing competition

For students interested in winning prize money for creative writing, Maricopa Community College District and Mesa Community College are hosting two upcoming competitions. The first is the annual MCCCD creative writing competition. The deadline for this is Nov. 21. Students can submit works into any or all of the four categories: poetry, fiction, essay or one-act play/script and must be currently enrolled in any MCCD college.

Empty bowls fill stomachs

To help feed the hungry in the East Valley, MCC will host its annual Empty Bowls event, an event which it has hosted for 20 consecutive years. At the event, students can purchase a handmade ceramic bowl for $10. Those who participate will get to choose their bowl from the more than 2,000 bowls that have been made for the event by students and community members.

The Career Services Center at MCC offers a unique opportunity that allows students to intern in the field of their future career. Students can take part in this program to get a feel of whether or not the career path that they have chosen is the right choice.

His co-workers have given up on it but when a series of bizarre murders are connected to the company that his wife worked for, new blood is given to the case.
